Nuclear Waste Services has a vacancy for a Business Case Manager to join its busy team, flexible working from its office in Oxfordshire.

As part of this role, you will lead the planning, development, drafting, production and delivery of business cases required for the permission to start work and deliver NWS programmes of work.  

You will be working within project delivery teams, the role holder will be prepared to challenge expert input and is responsible for ensuring that the business complies with Nuclear Decommissioning Authority/Department for Energy Security and Net Zero organisational and HM Treasury requirements, together with using lessons learned from similar projects and cases to inform Business Case preparation.

Roles and Responsibilities

Develop allocated business cases within the Programmes and subordinate sub-programmes/projects

  • Develop the appropriate Business Case structure and content within organisational and HM Treasury requirements.
  • Resolve emerging key issues associated with the case proposition to maximise the probability of a successful outcome including providing appropriate guidance to programme and project managers involved in the compilation of the case.
  • Delivery with strong focus on Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity.
  • Planning for delivery of allocated cases to meet wider organisational and programme timetables for drafting, approval and assurance of business cases.
  • Support development of programme and project personnel in preparing business cases for the NDA and Government.

Management of performance and controls

  • Working with the Head of Business Case & Sanction establish appropriate processes and controls for ensuring adherence of cases to quality standards, format, tracking contributions and comments, risks and issues, including escalation and reporting.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of the programme standards for development of business cases.
  • Ensure that appropriate arrangements are in place for management of cases through programme governance, formal assurance and reporting on progress to the Programme.

Costs and information

  • Ensure that business case costs at all levels are developed, reviewed and maintained through liaison with the GDF Programme Costs team.
  • Ensure any Programme and Project Business Cases are produced to appropriate standards and content to achieve endorsement at Board levels, including plans for the identification, realisation and management of benefits.

Management

  • Performance Management, including measurement and improvement of self and team, goal and priority setting.

Experience Required
  • Greater than five years’ experience in leading the preparation of programme and project business cases within a government or similar environment.
  • Experience of operating at business case management levels as part of a significant programme (WLC cost > £0.5bn) and in agile environments.
  • Public sector experience, particularly of working within a high value programme forming part of a Government Major Projects Portfolio (GMPP)/Major Projects Review Group (MPRG) programme in UK government, highly desirable.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and presentation skills are required as the post holder will be expected to produce concise and persuasive verbal and written briefing as well as engaging with individuals at all levels internally and externally with credibility.
  • Proven ability to translate senior direction and strategy into clear, actionable plans whilst providing analytical and problem-solving capability.
  • Leadership, team working. influencing and motivational skills required, together with the ability to communicate at all levels.
  • A pragmatic, problem-solving approach, in particular the ability to identify the key issues and distinguish the essential from the ‘nice to have’.
  • Experience of delivering proposals and cases to Programme and Project Board levels.
