Nuclear Waste Services has 2 vacancies for Delegated Design Authorities to join its busy team, flexibly working from its offices in Harwell, Warrington, and Cumbria.

These roles are in support of its GDF and Strategy, Interfaces & Packages Design Authority leads. They will provide integration, oversight, governance and approval of work relating to future waste disposal strategy, packages & facilities.

Roles and Responsibilities
  • Delegations for specific artefacts, topics, and subjects will be agreed with the relevant Design Authority Lead determined by candidates’ experience, skills and knowledge.
  • Ensuring Design Authority is discharged following NWS arrangement (broadly in accordance with INSAG-19 and associated ONR requirements, but also covering conventional and post-closure safety)
  • Co-ordinating technical oversight and governance on behalf of the Head of Design Authority & Technical Control
  • Oversight of requirements generation, management and approval in relevant areas
  • Review and acceptance of in-house and externally-produced designs, ensuring all aspects of safety, cost, etc have been considered
  • Ensure changes to design intent and associated technical baselines are appropriately controlled, reviewed and sentenced
  • Advise programme and strategy stakeholders on essential or beneficial design interventions, and other technical strategy issues as required
  • Maintaining an overview of the buildability, operability, & maintainability of relevant products, and advising relevant Duty Holders as necessary of any issues
  • Providing authoritative technical advice, using in-house subject matter experts as appropriate
Experience Required

Essential

  • Degree qualified in a relevant engineering or scientific subject with 10+ years of professional practice
  • Chartered membership of a relevant engineering or scientific body
  • Significant experience operating in and controlling complex design programmes
  • Knowledge of industry standards, processes, procedures, methods and principles to high-hazard design management in an operational site context
  • Leadership, influence, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the proven capability to work with and communicate to a wide range of technical and non-technical stakeholders
     

Desirable

  • Background in radioactive waste disposal
  • Direct experience of managing design intent in relevant contexts
  • Experience in environmental permitting
  • Nuclear / environmental safety case experience
  • Awareness of GDF and Repository designs and safety cases
  • Awareness of Nuclear Decommissioning Authority Strategy and Integrated Waste Management work
