Nuclear Waste Services is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated GIS Analyst to join our team, focusing on the digitisation of hard copy maps and plans for LLWR.
This role involves publishing and consistently updating these maps on the ArcGIS Enterprise Portal and ArcGIS SDEs, ensuring the highest levels of data accuracy and accessibility.
The ideal candidate will be responsible for converting hard copy maps and plans into digital formats with meticulous attention to detail, utilising ArcGIS software tools. A significant part of the role involves analysing spatial data and creating visually appealing and accurate maps that adhere to established standards and procedures. In the long term, the GIS Analyst will also engage in automating GIS tasks, primarily using FME or similar tools, to enhance efficiency and accuracy in our processes.
- Digitise data, cleanse data, publish data to SDEs within ArcMap Pro and ArcGIS Enterprise. This involves converting raw data into GIS data, ensuring its accuracy and usefulness, and managing the data within our GIS database.
- Analyse site data in conjunction with related third-party datasets such as Ordnance Survey products, open data, and other governmental and non-governmental data sources. You will use this data to create insightful, detailed maps and graphs, and to identify and address issues.
- Technically manage the delivery of spatial, analytical, and presentational techniques to the business to support live operations and investment decisions. This includes using GIS software for mapping and spatial analysis to produce high quality maps for use in reports and presentations.
- Promote and develop spatial data management best practise in line with the NWS GIS procedures. Ensure all GIS procedures comply with set standards and regulations.
- Act as a mentor to other GIS users. Assist in training and development initiatives and provide guidance to less experienced team members.
- Ability to interface with internal NWS and external stakeholders including NDA and regulators.
- Experience of briefing teams / managers on technical solutions and progress.

Essential
- Degree in Geographic Information Systems, Geography, Computer Science, or a related field.
- Proficiency with GIS software, particularly ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Enterprise Portal, and knowledge of SDEs.
- Experience in map digitisation, data cleansing, and spatial data management.
- Strong problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.
- Ability to communicate complex GIS information clearly to non-GIS users.
- Be prepared to have SC security clearance.
Desirable
- Have an awareness of key national geographic datasets including Ordnance Survey’s Master Map Topography Layer, ITN, Code-Point with Polygons and Boundary Line products.
- Have good working knowledge of FME and Python
- Experience in training or mentoring colleagues in GIS applications would be advantageous.
- Prior experience as a mentor or in a leadership role.
