We are looking for a Head of Risk and Assurance to join our busy team, at Nuclear Waste Services. The role will be hybrid working with occasional travel to sites in Cumbria, Warrington and Harwell.

As part of this role, you will report direct to the Chief Finance Officer accountable for the design, implementation and operational delivery of the Enterprise Risk Management Framework and the organisations Assurance Strategy and Framework that is;

  • Aligned to NWS mission and strategy and applicable to all areas of the business
  • Meets all legal, regulatory and NDA group standards and drives continual improvement utilising best practice from across the industry and externally
  • Enhances and protects organizational value by providing structured, risk-based and objective assurance, advice, and insight to the NWS Board, Board Sub-Committees, Executive Team and wider NDA Group.

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate:

  • Ability to simplify complexity, standardise our approach, insert discipline and drive focus.
  • An ability to see and operate strategically in order to assist and advise senior NWS (and some external) stakeholders, including to Board level, about appropriate risk management and assurance arrangements.
  • Experience in a senior position in a business risk or assurance role
  • Experienced in applying risk, audit and assurance controls and process regimes within a multi-faceted organisation
  • The ability to make complex and challenging decisions about the scale and scope of assurance outputs, and an ability to balance expectations against corporate risks and vulnerabilities.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of tools and techniques in assurance and approaches used in a range of industries
  • Comprehensive knowledge of tools and techniques in risk, and approaches used in a range of industries, including an understanding of the HM Treasury orange book guidelines.
  • Excellent leadership and influencing skills, along with the ability to flex personal style to engage and motivate others, and with the ability to communicate at all levels
  • Excellent relationship building, senior stakeholder management and the ability to work as a collective to deliver the required outcomes of the role
  • A can-do attitude, delivery focus and ability to manage own workload, including time and deadline management
  • Effective performance Management, including measurement and improvement of self and team
Experience Required
  • Experienced professional with a demonstrable expertise in assurance, audit and risk management essential
  • Experience of working in Insurance preferable but not essential
  • Delivery of implementation of new approaches and systems based on delivery expertise
  • Experience of working with multiple stakeholders in a regulated or complex industry
  • Educated to degree level in a related field such as risk management, assurance, audit or business operations is preferred, but not essential.
  • Hold chartered membership with a recognised professional body (IRM, IIA or equivalent)
  • Awareness of UK public sector systems, governance, and operating models (including HMT Orange book).
  • High resilience and the diplomacy to deal with ambiguity and change
  • Knowledge of the UK civil nuclear sector is desirable but not essential
  • Awareness of UK public sector systems, governance, and operating models.
  • Working knowledge of the ‘3 lines of defence’ assurance model
  • Candidates must either hold or be capable of achieving BPSS security clearance.
