Nuclear Waste Services has a vacancy for an experienced Lead Waste Specialist to join the team flexible working from one of its offices across the UK.

The job holders are accountable for authoritative technical leadership for the assigned portfolio, working proactively to drive delivery of the NWS mission, support effective management of UK radioactive waste, and new nuclear build. They will directly influence the delivery of waste management activities across the UK and support the long-term success of NWS disposal systems and services.

The job holders will ensure consistent and authoritative technical decision-making across the portfolio and establish effective stakeholder relationships. They are accountable for all technical scope within the assigned portfolio of responsibilities, ensuring effective delivery to time, cost, and quality, working collaboratively with the WM&I Capability Lead to develop and deploy competent resources to the portfolio.

Variously accountable (depending on portfolio) for delivering scope relating to waste acceptance and/or assessment, waste auditing, and assurance of the implementation of waste management practices, and other business critical tasks in support of the wider Technical Directorate.

Roles and Responsibilities
  • Ownership and delivery of the assigned portfolio of accountabilities under the relevant Senior Lead (see Annex A).  This includes consideration of the strategic context for the portfolio, near term priorities, future demand and decision landscape. The job holder work with all stakeholders to influence waste management decision making, both strategic and technical, in support of the NWS mission.
  • Technical authority and recognised company Subject Matter Expert (SME) for the assigned portfolio of accountabilities (see Annex A).
  • Responsible for the quality, consistency and delivery of all scope within assigned portfolio.  Primary responsibility for working with the WM&I Capability Lead to secure and deploy resources, and for the prioritisation, and budget and scope allocation for the assigned portfolio.  Accountable for delivering relevant company objectives and targets.
  • Responsible for the review and challenge of all customer work produced within the assigned portfolio, providing robust and resilient response to customer challenges and demands.  Act as primary approver for work generated within the assigned portfolio.
  • Identification of requirements to address gaps in NWS technical underpinning, knowledge base and technical position to address waste packager and NWS programme priorities. Working across Technical and projects and programmes to inform the prioritisation for and scope of supporting R&D.
  • Responsible for establishing and maintaining positive relationships with customers and stakeholders within the assigned portfolio, including technical and commercial relationships.
  • Responsible for regulator engagement for the assigned portfolio, including proactive management of regulatory issues and actions, and support to waste packager engagement with regulators.
  • Represent WM&I to internal stakeholders within NWS for the assigned portfolio, contributing to recognition, management and resolution of issues.
  • Ensure that required process controls are applied across the assigned portfolio, consistent with the NWS Integrated Management System.
Experience Required

Essential

  • Degree in a science or engineering subject, or equivalent experience in role.
  • Experience in a management and/or leadership role.
  • Extensive experience in oversight, critical review and challenge of technical activities.
  • Technical report writing to a good standard of English.
  • Resilience and proven ability to behave professionally in challenging circumstances.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to build and maintain excellent working relationships.

Desirable

  • Member of a relevant professional institute with an interest in working towards chartered status.
  • Extensive knowledge of radioactive waste packaging processes and UK waste packaging plant, and of options for packaging of legacy wastes and potential wastes from new reactors.
  • Extensive knowledge of radioactive waste disposal practices and requirements.
  • Experience of arrangements for developing and reporting UK radioactive waste inventories, including relevant tools.
  • Experience in supervising multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Experience of working in a regulated environment, particularly regulatory processes as applied to waste disposal, operational process plant and construction sites.
  • Diverse knowledge of the NWS portfolio of waste management, disposal at LLWR and GDF demands.
