Nuclear Waste Services has a vacancy for an experienced Portfolio Management Office (PMO) Manager to join the EPMO team flexible working from one of its offices across the UK.

The Waste Operations Portfolio is a sub-portfolio of Nuclear Waste Services, supporting the NWS strategy by delivering its allocated mission and strategic goals. The Waste Operations mission is to manage, operate and develop NWS Sites to maximise benefit for society.

The Waste Operations Portfolio office provides P30 support to decision makers and delivery teams within the Portfolio.

Roles and Responsibilities
  • Implement the service catalogue and service level agreements for the Portfolio Office; Define, manage and report against service level agreements.
  • Work with the Senior EPMO Delivery Lead Waste Ops/NSD to implement the P3M governance framework, in conjunction with business owners and programme, project or team managers. Support in overseeing the activities and operations of PMO processes, procedures, controls, governance framework and resources related to P3M delivery.
  • Support the overall integrity and coherence of the portfolio.
  • Support the portfolio in sanctioning projects for inclusion in the dossier.
  • Support the P3M delivery team in ensuring that existing initiatives and projects are effectively adopted into the portfolio.
  • Support the P3M delivery team in closeout of initiatives, including facilitation of post investment appraisals and benefit reviews.
  • Identify and manage dependencies across the portfolio.
  • Support the establishment of baselines (scope, cost, schedule and risk).
  • Identify any gaps in Programmes and Projects, understanding what activities are, or need to be, planned to address them.
  • Assist Portfolio, Programme and Project Managers with the creation of strategies, for effective planning, monitoring and delivery of Portfolios, Programmes and Projects.
  • Assist with the preparation and review of Integrated Assurance and Approval Plans.
  • On behalf of the portfolio board, provide an ongoing health check of the programmes or projects, reassessing whether they will continue to meet their overall objectives.
  • Report progress to the portfolio board via management dashboards; effectively communicate with stakeholders to provide regular status reports for a wide portfolio of projects at various points in the delivery cycle.
  • Be responsible for team objectives, one-to-one reviews and evaluation, and continual improvement of the PMO service.
  • Be responsible for workload management of the team and the prioritisation.
  • Own, perform, and direct regular functional peer reviews and performance meetings, to support the PMO Quality Assurance process during project execution and stage gate reviews.
  • Deputise for the Senior PMO Manager.
Experience Required

Essential skills:

  • Professional qualification in Project Management, Project Controls, Engineering, or a relevant degree in a related field.
  • Proven experience in P3M within major projects or programmes.
  • At least 5 years of relevant Project Management or P3O management experience, ideally in the nuclear sector or other highly regulated environment.
  • Management and leadership skills.
  • Ability to lead by example and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders.
  • Ability to provide solutions, solve problems and make key decisions in a dynamic environment.


Desirable skills:

  • Familiarity with how projects and programmes are delivered in the nuclear sector.
  • Accreditation with a professional body and commitment to professional development.
  • Accredited P3O qualification.
