Nuclear Waste Services has a vacancy for an experienced Safety Assessor (Specialist Team) to join our team in Harwell, Oxfordshire.

This will include producing new radiological safety assessments to support the Safety Case Manager, for a given area, and include implementation of safety case changes and delivery against the periodic review (LC15) programme. To identify engineering requirements and support engineering changes to plant and equipment. To support operations and liaise with Safety Case Owners via the Safety Case Manager.  To ensure that safety case changes are delivered to time, cost and quality. To provide support to team members and Nuclear Safety Case team processes and system development as directed by the Site Nuclear Safety Case Lead.    

The purpose of the Specialist Safety Assessor is to develop and deliver safety cases in one of the following areas:

  • Transport and underground hazards
  • Near Surface Disposal
  • Criticality Dose and Shielding
  • Human Factors
  • External Hazards and REPPIR
  • Radiological Protection Design
Roles and Responsibilities
  • Producing and checking Specialist  Safety Assessments
  • Producing and checking Safety Reports
  • Identifying required deliverables across the facility lifecycle
  • Acting as a Subject Matter Expert, delivering training and evaluating the competence of individuals in nuclear safety roles
  • Working with Project Managers to understand the scope of all work and manage resources to deliver requirements to time, cost and quality
  • Advising Safety Case Owners and Programme managers and determining safety case strategy
  • Working with supply chain partners to provide quality work packages to time and cost.
  • Participation in Best Available Technique (BAT) and design optimisation studies
  • Inputting to and reviewing work packaging, tender selection, and tender submissions for procurement of nuclear safety case services.
  • Leading and/or supporting regulator and stakeholder group interactions in connection with the role, including preparing and delivering technical presentations to stakeholder groups.
  • Ensuring that discipline team members are aware of and understand relevant legislation, ONR and LLWR guidance, policies and procedures
  • Providing definitive and reliable nuclear safety case advice to colleagues such as Program and Project Managers, Operational Staff, Engineering, ESC staff and Safety Case Owners
  • Support the development and delivery of training and mentoring for trainee Safety Assessors
  • Support the presentation of safety case documents to NSEC, MEHSC and NSC committees and ensure alignment with LC22 (modification) arrangements
  • Provide effective, proactive and action orientated safety case support to nominated areas of NWS
  • Carry out audit, review and improvement / modernisation tasks
  • Chair hazard and operability study (HAZOP) meetings.
  • Write safety assessments or other Nuclear Safety Case documentation such as Clearance Certificates, Engineering Schedules, Summary Reports.
  • QA check safety case documentation for logic and methodology or data and transcription errors
Experience Required

Essential

  • Science, Mathematics or Engineering degree
  • Experience of specialist / radiological  safety assessment, including application of safety case techniques and derivation of safety measures
  • A proven track record within the specialist area


Desirable

  • Presenting safety case documents to a safety committee
  • Engaging with, and working with supply chain
  • Change management process experience
  • Wide understanding of Nuclear Industry
  • Understanding of waste management and consignment processes
  • Experience of NWS safety case process and methodology
  • Experience of leading HAZOPs and/or HAZCON studies
  • Safety committee secretary experience
  • Experience of delivering safety case training
  • Experience of safety case collaboration with engineering and operations
  • Experience of Systems Engineering and Requirements Management
