Nuclear Waste Services has a vacancy for an experienced Safety Case Specialist (Siting) to join our team flexible working across the NWS estate.

The main purposes of this job are to:

  • Provide specific technical input and high-quality safety case advice (external hazards in particular) to engineers, designers and other stakeholders in support of the GDF Site Evaluation process and the development of GDF Environmental, Safety, Security and Safeguards (E3S) cases.
  • Produce (and where applicable, verify) specialist E3S Case content, methodology and guidance to time, cost and quality through the relevant Technical Governance process steps.
  • Effectively communicate the key findings, outputs and conclusions of safety case (external hazards and siting in particular) content, needs, and requirements, to a wide range of stakeholders (internal/ external, technical/ non-technical).
  • Support safety assessment as a consideration for GDF Site Evaluation.
  • Act as Intelligent Customer for supply chain contractors including definition of technical specifications for work.
  • Liaise and support colleagues in the NWS Safety Cases Team (particularly the Post-Closure Safety Case and Operational Safety Case specialists) and the wider NWS organisation.
  • Support interactions with and supply information to the Regulators, NDA and NDA group companies under the direction of the E3S Cases Systems Engineering Lead.
  • Acting as safety SME at community and public facing events.
  • If required, and as agreed with the E3S Cases Systems Engineering Lead, the job holder will also provide support to other NWS priorities (e.g. Near Surface Disposal and Repository Site activities).
Roles and Responsibilities
  • Developing parts of the GDF E3S Case, Disposability Assessments, External Hazards and Siting methodology and guidance.
  • Acting as verifier when appointed by the E3S Case Systems Engineering Lead.
  • Reviewing sections of the E3S Cases and key supporting documentation.
  • Acting as an Independent Peer Reviewer of the E3S Cases and other associated assessments.
  • Supporting Site Evaluation and Characterisation from an External Hazards and Site Licence perspective.
  • Managing technical work provided by the supply chain and act as the IC (within limits of knowledge and experience).
  • Identifying information or research needs to fill gaps in required evidence.
  • Assisting the E3S Case Systems Engineering Lead in drafting specifications and quality plans, interactions with NDA and NDA group companies and responding to Regulator feedback.

Experience Required

Essential

  • Strong interpersonal skills, comfortable working with people from different functions and backgrounds, to achieve results through effective team-working and collaboration. 
    Willing and eager to learn.
  • Able to communicate clearly and concisely (including distilling complex technical information into simpler, more digestible forms) to a wide range of stakeholders (specialist and non-specialist).
  • Understands the UK safety regulatory framework and the application of relevant legislation, guidance and relevant good practice within the nuclear industry or other highly regulated industry.
  • Has a good understanding of the UK Regulatory framework and its implications for UK Licensees.
  • Awareness of REPPIR legislation and its implications for siting.
  • A degree (or equivalent) in a safety related discipline OR a minimum of 5 years demonstrable employment history in nuclear safety.

Desirable

  • Experienced External Hazards author and verifier OR Experienced in the development and production of assessments in support of REPPIR.
