Nuclear Waste Services has a vacancy for a Security & Safeguards Lead to join our growing safety cases team, with flexible working across the NWS estate.

As part of this role, you will manage and support delivery of security and safeguards cases and their supporting elements, to quality, time and cost in line with NWS expectations. The Security and Safeguards Lead will be primarily responsible for:

  • Managing the development of the Security and Safeguards strategies
  • Providing technical co-ordination, governance, and oversite to the production, intelligent customer review and submission of the security and safeguards cases for geological and near surface disposal;
  • Managing holistic application of Security and Safeguards, in accordance with International and UK guidance and legislation;
  • Managing the implications of any design modifications on the repository site in respect of Security and Safeguards
  • Management of the selection of suitably qualified and experienced resource within the team and supply chain contractors (where appropriate) to produce S&S cases and co-ordinate governance activities.
Roles and Responsibilities
  • Act as an Intelligent Customer for Security and Safeguards
  • Delivery of Nuclear Security requirements ;
  • Delivery of Nuclear Safeguards requirements ;
  • Application of a Security and Safeguards by design (SASBD) approach;
  • Utilisation of the outputs of the Security case to inform the Construction Site Security Plan (CSSP) (where applicable) and Nuclear Site Security Plan (NSSP) for subsequent submission to the ONR CNSS;
  • Utilisation of the outputs of the safeguards case to inform the Design Information Questionnaire (DiO) and the Accountancy and Control Plan (ACP), for subsequent submission to the ONR CNSS;
  • The delivery and maintenance of a stakeholder management plan to maintain healthy and productive relationships with key stakeholders such as Operators, ONR CNSS, IAEA, MoD, NDA, BEIS, FCO, CPNI and the CNC;
  • Conduct regular liaison and management of key ONR CNSS submissions
Experience Required

Essential

  • Minimum of a degree (or equivalent) in a security related discipline
  • Membership of a professional institution.
  • A minimum of 10 years' experience of working in a Nuclear Security environment
  • Knowledge and Experience of the application of Nuclear Safeguards

Desirable

  • Chartered status or equivalent
  • Appropriate experience in successfully managing/leading teams
  • Competent in the planning and delivery of a Nuclear Security Case
  • An understanding of the delivery of Nuclear Safeguards
  • An understanding of Nuclear Security and Safeguards legislation and regulation

Specific Skills

  • In depth knowledge of the UK security regulatory framework and the application of relevant legislation, guidance and relevant good practice within the nuclear industry or other highly regulated industry.
  • Ability to provide leadership in the areas of responsibility
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, particularly at senior management level and liaison with UK regulators.
  • Ability to effectively explain complex technical issues to a wide audience (including non‑specialists), both verbally and in writing.
  • Strong project and people management skills
  • Basic understanding of financial principles and business reporting
  • Intermediate IT skills (MS 365)
