Nuclear Waste Services has a vacancy for a Principal Site Evaluation Manager to support the Head of Site Evaluation by leading the team responsible for the implementation of the Geological Disposal Facility (GDF) and Near Surface Disposal (NSD) site evaluation process in the UK.
As part of this role, you will undertake other activities commensurate with your skills and experience as and when required, and be expected to support and implement corporate decisions and initiatives as instructed by the Executive.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Intelligent Client and Technical Authority for site evaluation activities
- Maintain and develop understanding of site evaluation approaches and input this knowledge and understanding into discussions with key stakeholders.
- Responsible for ensuring that the overall siting process delivers to cost, scope, schedule and quality.
- Management and delivery of community, area and site evaluations in participating communities
- Support the Principal Community Engagement Manager in discussions with communities, and the Site Evaluation Managers with specialist contractors and regulators to specify and procure community, local and site studies.
- Manage the delivery of community and local studies necessary to support site evaluation.
- Manage the delivery high quality products to site evaluations, assessments and evaluations for potential GDF and NSD sites.
- Oversee the preparation of technical specifications suitable for procuring the full range of site evaluations, local studies and site feasibility studies and related activities needed to undertake the site evaluation process.
- Support the development of environmental permits and land-use permissions at all stages of GDF and NSD programme.
- Deliver high quality inputs to the land use planning processes.
- Support the Head of Permits and Consents in engaging with regulators and other stakeholders in securing successful permits and consents applications.
- Provide leadership to the Site Evaluation team to underpin the programme management of the GDF and NSD siting process.
- Performance Management, goal and priority setting of the Team, and including measurement and improvement of self.
- Budget, Procurement Management and Risk Management.
- Recruitment, selection and development of competent team.
- Co-ordinate development plans for individuals and team.
- Absence and welfare management.
Experience Required
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills and ability to act as a credible “ambassador” with external bodies.
- Good first degree in environmental science, engineering, geoscience or other relevant science or engineering subject.
- Underground experience
- Good understanding of Central Government operations, policy development and implementation.
- Good understanding of radioactive waste and wider nuclear policy.
- Experience of acting as “Intelligent Customer” for services procured from third parties.
- Knowledge of planning and regulatory requirements for geological disposal under the Planning Act 2008 for Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects, in particular environmental permitting, nuclear site licensing and land use planning.
- Experience in the contractual specification of site evaluation/investigation work.
- Knowledge of the principles of data and records management.
- Experience of developing and managing relationships with regulators and other stakeholders to ensure successful applications.
