Nuclear Waste Services has a vacancy for an experienced Waste Capability Lead to join the team flexible working from one of its offices across the UK.

The job holder will ensure that NWS capabilities are available to meet waste compliance, packaging assurance, and broader NWS project and programme demands within WM&I. They will significantly influence the timely delivery of NWS support for waste packaging and risk management across the UK nuclear industry.

Responsibilities include implementing matrix management arrangements within WM&I, managing all matrix resources, and ensuring that SQEP capability and competence requirements are met. The job holder will also focus on improving organisational resilience to meet current demands and prepare for future needs.

Key duties involve resource planning and reporting, staff technical training and development, and resolving prioritisation conflicts. The job holder will collaborate across NWS Technical and wider NWS to develop WM&I capabilities in line with the evolving mission.

Roles and Responsibilities
  • Responsible for maintaining the technical waste management and inventory capability and competence of all staff within WM&I, ensuring that appropriate competences are maintained within the function, supporting delivery of all scope within
  • WM&I accountabilities, working with existing learning and development arrangements.
  • Responsible for working across the Technical Directorate and NWS to ensure that the full range of SQEP capabilities are available to support delivery of waste compliance and packaging assurance and to meet wider NWS project and programme demands on WM&I.
  • Responsible for ensuring that competence requirements associated with WM&I scope are recognised in NWS competence management arrangements, and that WM&I competence is assessed and managed under these arrangements.
  • Responsible for development of WM&I and Technical competence and SQEP requirements for WM&I scope, including planning and delivery of dedicated learning and implementation of broader, standard NWS requirements for all WM&I staff.
  • Responsible for development and implementation of resource planning arrangements for WM&I scope, supporting planning and resource management through WM&I matrix arrangements, including prioritisation, deconfliction and escalation.
Experience Required

Essential

  • Degree level qualification, or equivalent experience in role.
  • Extensive experience in oversight, critical review and challenge of technical activities.
  • Experience in a management and/or leadership role, holding accountability for implementation and delivery of assigned activities under budgetary and resource constraints, recognising and implementing prioritisation and balancing demands.
  • Experience in strategic engagement and delivery, representing current positions, and recognising and actively challenging conflicting positions.
  • Extensive experience in oversight and management of staff.
  • Resilience and proven ability to behave professionally in challenging circumstances.
  • Excellent communication skills, including writing to a good standard of English.
  • Ability to build and maintain excellent working relationships with colleagues and stakeholders at all levels of seniority.

Desirable

  • Member of a relevant professional institute with an interest in working towards chartered status.
  • Management of extensive and/or diverse teams, including supervisory and pastoral care elements, and development and maintenance of competence.
  • Knowledge of radioactive waste management in the UK.
  • Experience in supervising multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Knowledge of the NWS portfolio of waste management, disposal at LLWR and GDF demands, including processes for delivery of assurance, assessment and inventory management.
