Nuclear Waste Services has a vacancy for a Waste Compliance Specialist to join its busy team in Cumbria.
The appointed individual will provide technical waste compliance expertise for waste consignments requiring disposal at the LLW Repository Ltd, authorised landfills or treatment service providers such as incineration or metals treatment facilities.
Primarily this role focuses on leading the Waste Consignment Information (WCI) technical assessments; ensuring customer WCI submissions meet WAC compliance for disposals at the LLW Repository site.
It also includes supporting the wider Waste Inventory & Compliance (WI&C) function in managing radiological and non-radiological capacity management, technical assessment of customer Waste Characterisation (WCH) forms, Waste Variation (WCV) forms, supporting BAT/BPM/BPEO studies and the LLWR Characterisation Standard.
You will be working in a dynamic service environment with competing priorities on a daily basis. You must be able to manage and prioritise workload while maintaining standards and delivering quality work. Attention to detail is essential.
- Undertaking technical assessments of customers WCI forms for disposal/supercompaction against the latest Waste Acceptance Criteria (WAC) for disposal at the LLWR site, whilst maintaining accurate records of decision making.
- Undertaking robust and comprehensive technical assessments of customers WCH and WCV submissions, whilst maintaining accurate records of decision making.
- Undertaking technical reviews and challenge relating to customer BAT studies in support of WCH submissions and/or other pertinent information documented in the WCH form.
- Providing sound technical advice to customers and/or the wider team with respect to waste characterisation methods and potential treatment and disposability options.
- Provision of support and guidance to the wider Waste Inventory and Compliance (WI&C) team for more complex waste types.
- Maintaining frequent levels of communication with customers in respect to their form submissions, including suggested areas of improvement and any planned LLWR customer consultations which may impact upon them.
- Ongoing development of WI&C processes and procedures, including support of periodic process owner reviews.
- Provision of sound advice to customers with respect to waste consignment and waste characterisation methods and potential treatment and disposability of wastes.
- Supporting the development and ongoing management of the LLWR Characterisation Standard.
Other key responsibilities, including (but not limited to);
- To lead and/or support customer technical audits as part of the LLWR waste assurance programme
- To provide support to the wider waste assurance programme
- Supporting the wider WI&C function with respect to improvement programmes and waste inventory related tasks/activities
- Supporting the development of tools and software in support of core WI&C function tasks and activities, including waste tracking systems and management system documentation
- Awareness of the environmental issues associated with the role

- Ensuring waste is correctly segregated to ensure compliant disposal
- Manage the risks within your scope of work in compliance with the company risk management procedures

Essential
- University degree in scientific discipline or relevant demonstrable experience.
- Good verbal and written communication skills and experience of working with a range of internal and external stakeholders.
- Strong organisational skills and attention to detail, due to the range of data and information to be generated and managed.
- Experienced user of MS Office suite, Word, Excel, Outlook.
- Able to work well within a team.
- Self-motivated and able to work with minimal supervision.
- Customer service skills and ability to build strong customer relationships.
- Ability to communicate with staff at all levels and challenge where necessary.
Desirable
- Sufficient experience in nuclear waste management or related areas
- Accredited Radioactive Waste Advisor
- Project management skills and qualifications to aid the delivery of technical work.
- Understanding of UK LLW Policy and regulatory frameworks (EPR etc.)
- Familiar with typical Nuclear Licensed Site management system and procedures.
