Nuclear Waste Services has a fantastic opportunity for a Data Management and Governance Lead to join our busy team hybrid working from our office in Harwell, Oxfordshire.

As part of this role, you will support the Head of Digital Strategy & Architecture in the development and implementation of an approach to the governance and management of data across NWS and in the development of an innovative Digital, Data, Strategy & Architecture capability. 

You will also be working with internal and external stakeholders to promote and ensure alignment between strategic data-related activities and initiatives across the organisation, to support BAU by working with stakeholders to ensure that data generated or created during in-flight projects within the GDF Major Capital Programme is consistently managed across workstreams in a standardised way. This may be with internal SME’s and data owners and external Data Producers (e.g., suppliers). 

You will work closely with the Data Strategy Lead and GIS Lead to ensure that use cases and business requirements for spatial and non-geospatial data are established, managed and piped into the relevant strategies, forums and governance mechanisms (such as the Digital Design Authority). To foster and embed a data-aware and data literate culture, influencing and shaping continuous ways of working, policy, procedure and process improvements amongst data owners, producers and consumers. 

Roles and Responsibilities

People and culture: 

  • Work with internal and external stakeholders (data producers, owners and consumers) to improve, promote and enhance data quality and minimise data pollution by implementing controls (procedures/processes) or best practice behaviours (people) at organisational level and in relevant teams. 
  • Collaborate with Digital and Data stakeholders to develop and establish data governance policy, procedure and process to gather business requirements and facilitate acceptance/approval of procedures and processes. 
  • Contribute to data landscaping activities to ensure that data sources and repositories are known and understood. 
  • Be the primary contact for data management and data governance queries. 

Strategy, policy and procedure: 

  • Lead the continued development of data management procedures focusing on the following: 
  • Data Management (Acquisition to Access) 
  • Data Quality 
  • Data Governance 
  • Metadata, Reference and Master Data 
  • Contribute to developing overarching NWS Digital and Data policy and strategy, providing data management and governance SME input where required. 

Data technology and innovation: 

  • Contribute to designing and selecting innovative technology solutions where data is a key factor and participate in the planning, organisation and delivery of product prototypes where applicable. 
  • Contribute to developing and maintaining the business glossary, data dictionary and ecosystem map. 
Experience Required

Essential 

  • Ability to hold a minimum of UK Baseline Clearance (BPSS). 
  • Proven track record of consulting on and contributing to data related strategic work in Civil Nuclear or a related industry. 
  • Experience of delivering corporate data and information management governance, procedures and processes in Civil Nuclear or a related industry. 
  • Experience of working with enterprise level data management software, techniques and capabilities. 
  • Experience using Microsoft Office365, including SharePoint Lists, PowerQuery and PowerAutomate to improve business efficiencies. 
  • Experience in the design and development of data-related policies and standard operating procedures in response to business needs. 
  • Experience in the development and establishment of data governance structures and forums. 
  • Excellent relationship building and stakeholder management skills and the ability to work collaboratively to deliver the required outcomes. 
  • Experience of working on large complex ICT and Regulatory projects. 
  • Membership of a professional data organisation the (e.g., DAMA, ODI) 

Desirable 

  • High level of energy and drive for results - able to prioritise and work with rigour to a high quality. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.  
  • High resilience and the diplomacy to deal with ambiguity and change. 
  • Experience of working in fast paced, complex change or transformation projects.
