Nuclear Waste Services has two vacancies for Senior Engineering Managers within the Geological Disposal Facility (GDF) and Higher Activity Waste (HAW) Engineering Management team.
As senior engineering manager, you will be responsible for developing engineering strategy, programme and leading a system engineering approach to development of safe solutions in specified areas of expertise across our GDF and HAW programmes. This includes coordinating input from the wider engineering function into the GDF programme where specialist discipline input is needed.
You will contribute to:
GDF site evaluation, leading engineering feasibility evaluation of potential sites:
- To understand whether the requirements for construction, sustainable design, retrievability and the ability to accommodate the inventory for disposal can be satisfied.
- To enable a government decision on sites to proceed to borehole characterisation.
Ensuring Nuclear Waste Services has the capability and knowledge needed to begin initial GDF concept design on sites selected for characterisation. This includes:
- Engineering input to GDF system requirements definition.
- Development of GDF design strategies.
- Being the customer for GDF engineering design process development.
- Engineering input to site characterisation planning, consents and permits.
- Engineering input to our GDF delivery operating model, business cases and procurement of our design delivery partner.
- Pre-concept design, including development of the engineering knowledge base needed to inform early design decisions.
Direct report to Principal Engineering Manager – GDF & HAW.
- Intelligent Client / Intelligent Customer for engineering design services.
- Delegated Design Authority and / or Project Technical Integrator for appropriate aspects of GDF design and management of supply change interface.
- Technical authority within area of responsibility.
- Champion a systems engineering approach to deliver development of safe engineered solutions from the supply chain.
- Provide professional and / or mentoring support to the Engineering Managers and peers within your knowledge base.
- Strategy, risk management and programme development.
- Delegate for Principal Engineering Manager – GDF & HAW as required.
Essential

- Chartered membership or fellowship status of relevant professional institution.
- Demonstrated ability to represent business in regulatory, commercial, professional and stakeholder environments.
- Engineering experience in a field of relevance to the GDF Programme.
Desirable
- Senior practitioner within own engineering discipline.
- Experience of systems engineering and management of contracts for safety integrated engineering design development.
- Detailed understanding of aspects relevant to development of a GDF, transport infrastructure, and operational estates within own technical discipline.
- Experience of the client to supply chain relationship and understanding of the Intelligent Customer role.
- Experience in developing a scope of works and undertaking the specification, management, and oversight of contracts for design.
- Project/ programme management experience, including risk and opportunity management.
- Experience of early design phases of major engineering projects is essential, such as front-end engineering design, concept design, design strategy development or similar.
- Experience in one or more of infrastructure, nuclear, mining, waste management or other high-hazard industries.
- Experience of multi-disciplinary engineering management, with sufficient cross-discipline awareness to provide direction and coordination.
