Nuclear Waste Services has vacancies for Senior Engineering Managers to join its busy teams in Warrington and Oxfordshire.

The 3 disciplines are:

  • Industrial Architecture, Planning and Site Layout through development and operational phases
  • Civil Engineering with experience with Construction Logistics, and Constructability
  • Mechanical Engineering with awareness of Electrical, Control, and Instrumentation 

As senior engineering manager, you will be responsible for developing engineering strategy, programme and leading a system engineering approach to development of safe solutions in specified areas of expertise.

You will directly report to a Principal Engineering Manager and build and maintain strong relationships with Waste management, Siting and Engagement, HSSSEQ, Communications and Stakeholder Engagement and Business services Directorates.

You will be working with supply chain, professional institutions, National Industry forums and international waste management organisations. And, include close liaison and interaction with the Nuclear Safety, Requirements and Programme, Research and Environmental teams.

Scope of the Roles

  • Intelligent Client / Intelligent Customer for engineering design services.
  • Delegated Design Authority and / or Project Technical Integrator for appropriate aspects of GDF design and management of supply change interface.
  • Champion a systems engineering approach to deliver development of safe engineered solutions from the supply chain.
  • Provide professional and / or mentoring support to the Engineering Managers and peers within your knowledge base.
  • Strategy, risk management and programme development.
Roles and Responsibilities

Intelligent Client / Intelligent Customer

  • Responsible for leading and acting as Intelligent Client / Intelligent Customer for engineering design services in the appropriate systems engineering technical disciplines.
  • Intelligent Customer and/or Technical lead for engineering input to disposability assessments, siting and engagement activities in accordance with procedures.
  • Experience with development of outcome focussed scope for Contracts balanced with greater detail where client requirements necessitate

Delegated Design Authority

  • Responsible for leading as Delegated Design Authority for appropriate aspects of the systems design.
  • Represents business in technical forums relating to a Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project and or development of Engineering.

Systems Engineering and integrated safe solutions

  • Leading approach to the systems engineering to develop integrated safe design.
  • Responsible for ensuring that the impact of safety, environmental and other requirements of the safety assessments are translated effectively into an understanding of requirements for engineered systems.
  • Responsible for obtaining design solutions through the supply chain that satisfy the requirements of the established by the Requirements and Programme function.

Mentor and support to the Engineering Managers and peers

  • Contributes to the development of the engineering programme and engineering input to siting and engagement activities.
  • Responsible for mentoring and provision of professional guidance to Engineering Managers and ensuring that they achieve and maintain appropriate professional standards and qualifications.
  • Provide advice and guidance within your knowledge base to build broader functional awareness of all engineering aspects of design and delivery.

Strategy and programme development

  • Supports the Head of Engineering by contributing to the development engineering strategy for the GDF and other programmes.
  • Develops the engineering design programme in own areas and supports the Head of Engineering by contributing to the development of the overall programme for engineering design.
  • Understands how international radioactive waste management organisations have developed design solutions and their applicability to the geological disposal systems.
  • Manages risks associated with the delivery of the work programme, with accountability for their assessment and mitigation.
Experience Required
  • Good first degree in engineering subject.
  • Chartered membership or fellowship status of relevant professional institute.
  • Nationally recognised senior practitioner within own engineering discipline.
  • Experience of systems engineering and management of contracts for safety integrated engineering design development.
  • Detailed understanding of aspects relevant to development of a GDF, transport infrastructure, and operational estates within own technical discipline.
  • Demonstrated ability to represent business in regulatory, commercial, professional and stakeholder environments.
