Nuclear Waste Services has an exciting new opportunity for a Senior Project Manager to join their busy RACER team in Cumbria.

As part of this role, you will have overall day to day responsibility and accountability for several multi-discipline Projects and Tasks, within the portfolio the and the post holder will be required to lead a team of Project Managers, Sub Project Managers and other Supply Chain staff to ensure delivery in accordance with the Life Time Plan (LTP). The role will oversee the full project and task lifecycle including initiation, definition, planning, construction, commissioning and handover. The person will also be supporting Project Managers at a more junior level.

RACER (Repository Asset Care, Enhancements and Remediation) ensures the Nuclear Waste Service site assets are renewed, refurbished, upgraded and improved where appropriate. Working closely with the Sites main stakeholders the Programme delivers Tasks and Projects ranging from £50k to £25 million and above. The Tasks and Projects could cover a wide range of complexity and can include study work through to signficant design packages and construction of new plant or building.

Typical annual Spend is estimated at £7-9 million per annum (including internal costs), however this will vary depending depending on the pipeline of task and projects. The Programme is in scope until closure of the site in 2130.

Roles and Responsibilities
  • Leading and supervising other team members to manage multi-disciplinary Projects and Tasks ranging from low to medium complexity.
  • Identifying stakeholder expectations and defining Project objectives, critical success factors, dependencies, and constraints.
  • Contributing to Project Business Cases.
  • Consolidating and documenting the fundamental components of Projects (scope, schedule, resource requirements, budgets, risks, opportunities and issues, and quality requirements) whilst talking into account safety and the environment.
  • Ensure Projects and Tasks are planned in sufficient detail to ensure integration of all activities, identification of dependencies, and understanding of critical paths and key milestones.
  • Ensuring that all appropriate and robust Project controls are in place.
  • Actively identifying and managing risks and opportunities including instigating mitigation actions, identifying risk responses and contingency plans and manage then through to conclusion.
  • Actively identifying and responding to issues that affect Projects and Tasks.
  • Actively managing dependencies.
  • Reviewing changes for potential impact on the Project Baseline and actively managing changes to Project delivery, scope and costs.
  • Managing the integration of Project outputs into business-as-usual, addressing the readiness of users, compatibility of work systems and the realisation of benefits.
  • Managing stakeholders, taking account of their levels of influence and particular interests.
  • Managing a multi-disciplinary Project team consisting of Project Managers, Engineers, Sub Project Managers and other Supply Chain staff to ensure delivery in accordance with the Life Time Plan (LTP).
  • Line Management responsibility for 2 x Project Managers.
  • Providing direction, guidance and coaching to more junior Project Managers and the broader Project team. Applying appropriate Project management life cycles, processes, methods, techniques, and tools, tailoring them to the specific needs of a Project.
  • Establishing and maintaining governance arrangements for the delivery of Projects, defining clear roles, responsibilities, and accountabilities.
  • Managing Project requirements and determining the best means of satisfying those requirements within the context of Project objectives and constraints.
  • Ensuring all necessary cross-functional resources are identified and that justification for such resources is clear.
  • Ensuring that comprehensive budgets are prepared, reflecting the plan and all resource needs, to allow earned value reporting and responding to any trends and variances.
  • Establishing effective working relationships with all key stakeholders.
  • Preparing monthly progress dashboards using earned value analysis and RAGA status to communicate status, risks, opportunities and issues.
  • Working collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders at all levels within the organisation to define and achieve mutual understanding of the scope, adapting their style of management and leadership to each situation.
  • Agreeing contracts, monitoring compliance and management and implementation of customer variations.
  • Ensuring a smooth hand-over to the operational team and any other supporting functions identified.
  • Directing and motivating the Project team to achieve the desired results.
Experience Required
  • Has a record of proven performance as a Project/Delivery Manager on previous Projects and demonstrable evidence of the management of Task and Project change.  
  • Knowledge in expediting and administration of NEC 3/4 forms of Contract.
  • Experience of initiating, developing, and leading an Engineering biased collaborative team consisting of direct reportees, various internal support functions and Supply Chain resources. 
  • Exhibits demonstrable qualities in providing vision, motivation and inspiration, setting high standards and expectations, leading by example and holding the Project Team to account.
    Experience in working within relevant project delivery environments e.g. engineering, construction, or technical biased projects.
  • Demonstrate an ability to identify potential problems/risks or opportunities, analysis issues and develop solutions to mitigate problems/risks and exploit opportunities; 
  • Leads and motivates desired behaviours (e.g., coaching the delivery teams and mentoring one or more individuals). 
  • Proven ability to manage and prioritise own workload against multiple stakeholders and competing priorities. 
  • Can demonstrate having the ability to proactively engage and impact on others and work effectively as part of a wider team. 
  • Ability to ensure minimum standards and fundamental process requirements are maintained when under pressure to deliver and ability to challenge others at all levels of the organisation. 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills.
  • Already holds the role of Senior Project Manager. 
  • Engineering discipline with 5-10 years relevant experience in the nuclear industry or other highly regulated industry;
  • Working within the Nuclear Industry or similar regulated environment. 
  • An understanding and experience of Government programme / Project Delivery expectations; 
  • Familiarity with Nuclear Decommissioning Authority working practices. 
  • A person in the role will generally work independently but may require some guidance. 
Qualifications Needed
  • Accredited Project Manager certification (APM Project Management Qualification) or 5-10 years relevant experience in a collaborative project delivery environment. 
  • Graduate in a relevant discipline or 5-10 years relevant experience in a collaborative and project delivery environment.
