Nuclear Waste Services has an exciting opportunity to join our Design Authority team – a small leadership and co-ordination team within the GDF Programme. 

The Design Authority is responsible for owning the GDF system design, making sure it meets all requirements, and that these requirements are translated into the as built design. We do this by developing design solutions to meet the requirements, assessing the safety, security and sustainability of different options, and making decisions.

We need an integration manager to co-ordinate our plan of work, manage the cross functional team that forms the Design Authority, and implement technical governance and assurance arrangements. We’re looking for someone with a pragmatic, problem solving approach, strong influencing skills and an ability to communicate at all levels.

Roles and Responsibilities

Co-ordinate the Design Authority function

  • Maintain currency of demand, delegations and plan of work, through oversight of Technical Task Initiation Forms and Technical Control Plans working with the Deputy Chief Engineer to identify and manage change

Develop and implement systems for managing technical governance arrangements and design authority management

  • Support management of technical governance.
  • Develop system to record technical governance and Design Authority reviews.
  • Develop system to record design decisions.
  • Develop and co-ordinate systems for technical assurance working with Operations Directorate and GDF Chiefs Advisory group.
  • Ensure the GDF technical strategies are appropriately cascaded in working arrangements and forward planning.

Develop, manage and control the Design Authority organisation

  • Identify demand for new delegations through understanding of the Design Authority plan of work, and oversight of Technical Task Initiation Forms and Technical Control Plans.
  • Co-ordinate necessary competence checks and approval of delegation by the Head of Design Authority.
  • Maintain a record of current delegations.

Develop, manage and control the Design Authority plan of work

  • Identify emergent demand and work with the Deputy Chief Engineer to maintain currency of the plan of work.
  • Drive development of the design authority decision schedule for initial concept design (technical decisions – architecture of the GDF).
  • Work with the Programme Directorate to schedule and manage the design authority plan of work.

Experience Required
  • Good first degree in science or engineering discipline.
  • Chartered status membership (or working towards it) of a relevant professional institution.
  • Appreciation of the requirements for the geological disposal of radioactive wastes and materials.
  • Understanding of Systems Engineering / Architecture.
  • Proven ability to produce clear, concise written technical work that is appropriate for a range of audiences.
  • Ability to direct contractors who are recognised experts in their fields
  • Strong influencing skills together with the ability to communicate at all levels.
  • A pragmatic, problem-solving approach, in particular the ability to identify the key issues and distinguish the essential from the ‘nice to have’.
  • Willingness to work as a team member and learn new skills.
  • Ability to work on parallel tasks, often to tight deadlines.
  • Proven project management skills.
  • Ability to develop a strategic understanding and identify wider impacts on other work areas.
  • Ability to facilitate workshops with varied stakeholders and varied viewpoints to come to solutions.
