Nuclear Waste Services has a vacancy for an experienced Environmental Engineer / BAT Assessor (Safety Case Engineer (Operational Environment) to support the environmental safety case for the Operational Phase of the GDF.
The main purposes of this job are to:
- Deliver safety assessments and other safety case deliverables to support the GDF Operational Safety Case
- Provide high quality safety advice to engineers, designers and other stakeholders to support the GDF Operational Safety Case
- Define and specify the work required to support the GDF Operational Safety Case
- Progress safety case deliverables through the relevant Technical Governance process steps
- Effectively communicate the key findings, outputs and conclusions of the Operational Safety Case to a wide range of stakeholders (internal/ external, technical/ non-technical)
- Ensure that safety assessments and other elements of the GDF Operational Safety Case are delivered to time, cost and quality
If required, and as agreed with the GDF Operational Safety Case Lead, the job holder will also provide safety case support to other NWS priorities (e.g. Transport, Site Evaluation, GDF Post Closure safety, Near Surface Disposal and LLWR Repository Site activities).
- Providing high quality and timely advice to the GDF programme on Operational Environmental issues
- Delivering Operational Environmental/ BAT assessments and other documents to support the Operational Safety Case for the GDF
- Carrying out underpinning Operational Environmental activities to satisfy regulatory compliance (e.g. environmental permitting, Guidance on Requirements for Release (GRR), environmental management systems)
- Contributing to the development of documentation for GDF environmental submissions
- Contributing to Environmental Impact Assessments and/or consideration of conventional impacts from waste disposal activities
- Undertaking the Operational Environmental aspects of the Disposability Assessment process, which support NWS issuing Letters of Compliance (LoC) to waste producers
- Undertaking sustainability assessments
- Technical co-ordination of the production of Operational Environmental/ BAT assessments and their underpinning work by the supply chain (supported by NWS Project/ Programme Management as required)
- Specifying work to ensure that it is adequately scoped and effectively delivered
- Ensuring work is carried out in line with NWS Technical Governance procedures
- Ensuring timely and accurate progress reporting to NWS Project/ Programme Management as required
- Acceptance of externally produced deliverables, acting in the capacity of Intelligent Customer (IC)
- Delivery of Operational Environmental/ BAT deliverables to time, cost and quality
- Checking and review of Operational Environmental/ BAT safety assessments

Disposability Assessment (support to the issue of Letters of Compliance (LoC) to waste producers)
If required, and as agreed with the GDF Operational Safety Case Lead, the Job Holder will also provide support to other NWS priorities (e.g. Transport, Site Evaluation, GDF Post Closure safety, Near Surface Disposal and LLWR Repository Site activities).
Additional Responsibilities
- The job holder will also be expected to:
- Contribute to development of the NWS Environmental capability, methodology and guidance
- Develop their own skills/ experience via Continued Professional Development (CPD) (either as part of a professional institute or independently)
- Support the GDF generic Disposal System Safety Case (gDSSC) Change Control procedure
- Contribute to the training and development of team members, including maintenance of SQEP capability, resilience and succession planning
- Interface effectively with internal GDF teams (e.g. engineering, waste management, requirements, research, post-closure, transport).
- Deal responsively, but also proactively, with a range of internal and external stakeholders (e.g. Nuclear Safety and Environmental Committee (NSEC), Independent Oversight/ Independent Assessment (IO/IA))
- Contribute to regulatory interactions
- Represent the GDF Programme and NWS at national and international fora and events
- Work collaboratively with other NWS staff and suppliers to ensure good value for money
