Nuclear Waste Services has a vacancy for a System Engineer flexible working across the NWS estate.
Working within interdisciplinary teams and alongside other systems engineers, you will be responsible for developing and controlling system models and systems engineering tools, developing a Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) approach to projects in Nuclear Waste Services (NWS), including the design of the UK’s Geological Disposal Facility (GDF). This is an opportunity to do pioneering work in the application of MBSE and Digital Engineering to help solve some of the most complex environmental challenges for generations to come.
To support NWS projects in the successful realisation of waste management and disposal solutions through the application of systems engineering and the development of Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE).
This role does not require a nuclear industry background as we are happy to recruit a diverse mix of industry backgrounds. You will be working on large & complex projects including the GDF, and future programs within the nuclear waste sector. This is an exciting time to join this team as you will get to influence & create models, processes, and requirements from the ground up.
- Elicit requirements and specifications across NWS projects, using requirements management practices.
- Use system modelling languages (eg. SysML/UML) to develop and control model architecture frameworks, ontologies, viewpoints and views of system artefacts, processes and diagrams using MBSE practices on behalf of projects and programmes.
- Manage and administrate requirements in an IBM DOORS NG requirements database to ensure they are approved, current and aligned with the controlled knowledge base.
- Develop and implement change controls to requirements, specifications, models, and other configured items.
- Facilitate workshops and other forms of cross-functional working to apply relevant Systems Engineering processes.
- Developing and controlling architectures and interfaces that support integration and assessment of disposal system requirements and constraints.
- Developing and controlling the use of system models, using appropriate methods, to support system definition, analysis and cross-functional communication.
- Provide cross-functional support to projects using in developing and applying a Systems Engineering approach, including training, and coaching in SE processes.

- Experience of systems engineering/requirements management, or an appreciation of this.
- Experience of model-based systems engineering/development of logical system models or an appreciation of this.
- Ability to plan and manage interactive programmes of work to ensure milestones are achieved and delivered to the required standard.
- Proven track record of producing technical documentation within time, cost, and quality constraints and for a range of audiences.
- Good task management skills, including the management of contractors and the ability to work on parallel tasks.
- Good facilitation, interpersonal and team working skills.
