The Waste Engineer will work with Customers and Waste Services personnel to develop current and future opportunities by gathering the necessary data and providing waste management advice. The Waste Engineer may be seconded into specific customer programmes and projects to ensure that Nuclear Waste Services are offering support and waste management advice across the waste lifecycle and as high up in the value chain as possible.
This role will suit you if you have a waste or nuclear background, and you have been working from an operational point of view. This is less of a technical role and more to do with processes, risk assessments, and arranging inspections. You will work between the customer and Waste Services / our supply chain, ensuring that communication is clear, and you will have a strong ability to build rapport with a mix of different internal/external stakeholders.
- Provide waste management and operations advice and support across the waste lifecycle to customers, their decommissioning projects and waste management activities, advising on the information required to access waste treatment and disposal routes in line with relevant national strategies.
- Support other members of the Customer Management and Expert Support team in the development of opportunities and with customers to gather the necessary information and data required to convert opportunities into Waste Enquiries. Work the wider department to support the development of waste solutions to meet customer needs aligning with the Waste Services Vision and Mission.
- For larger nonstandard and complex projects, work with the Waste Services teams, to provide trouble-shooting support and ensuring efficient and effective delivery of the services to meet customer needs.
- Acting as a visible ambassador for Nuclear Waste Services, and our portfolio of services.
- Identification and implementation of process improvements and supporting wider change initiatives to Waste Services to deliver sustained and measured improvements in the day-to-day service provided to customers. Actively identify and share LFE and best practice across the wider waste community to inform waste management and decommissioning strategies.
- Ensure that the Customer Relationship Management (CRM) System is fully maintained and updated as opportunities are developed.
- Operate high up the value chain, acting as a change agent to the behaviour and performance of customers waste management, facilitated by Joint Waste Management Plans and benefits management.
- Develop and sustain a collaborative working relationship with waste service providers.
- Supporting Service Assurance activities including Customer / Service Provider Audits as required and manage service non-conformance events. Support the timely investigation of events as required and identify improvements.
- Comply with the Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality policies, procedures, work instructions and risk assessments. Support the continuous improvement of Health, Safety Environment and Quality.
- Support the effective deployment of company-wide policies, processes, systems, and procedures ensuring that at all times the business remains compliant. This includes, but is not limited to, the need to comply with the company’s Equality and Diversity Policy and undertake identified associated learning and development activities.

Essential
- Practical experience working in a waste field on decommissioning or operational nuclear sites.
- Wide knowledge of procedures and methods relevant to his/her field together with full understanding of underlying principles.
- An understanding of waste routing and acceptance criteria / conditions for acceptance for waste management routes including VLLW, Combustible, Metallic Waste Treatment, LLW, and other service routes as applicable.
- Ability to travel and spend periods of time at customer sites.
- Ability to interact with a range of different stakeholders at various levels.
- Understanding of relevant risks and health and safety considerations when working in operational environment.
Desirable
- Experience of working with Nuclear Waste Services Customers and stakeholders.
- Knowledge and experience of transport and packaging of radioactive materials.
- Project management experience of radioactive waste projects.
- Graduate (min 2:2) in relevant discipline or equivalent, possession of appropriate professional qualification, or substantive relevant experience.
- Accredited to an appropriate professional body where appropriate.
