Nuclear Waste Services has a vacancy for a Senior Engineering Manager (Civil & Structural Engineering) to join its busy team at the LLWR Repository in Cumbria.

As part of this role, you will be responsible for developing engineering strategy, programme and leading a systems engineering approach to development of safe solutions on works across our programmes of work (LLWR, NSD & GDF).

Areas of expertise sought for these roles include civil / structural engineering management, civil structural engineering design, design oversight, inter-discipline co-ordination, Intelligent Customer, civil asset inspections and surveying.

The successful candidate will be required on site at the LLWR Repository 2-3 days a week.

Roles and Responsibilities

Intelligent Client

  • Responsible for leading and acting as Intelligent Client for engineering design services in the appropriate systems engineering technical disciplines.
  • Intelligent Customer and/or technical lead for engineering input to disposability assessments, siting and engagement activities in accordance with NWS procedures.

Design Authority

  • Responsible for leading as Design Authority for appropriate aspects of LLWR, NSD and the GDF systems design and transport system.
  • Represents NWS in technical forum relating to Major Projects / Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects.
  • Management of supply chain interface.

Systems Engineering and integrated safe solutions

  • Leading NWS’s approach to the systems engineering to develop integrated safe designs.
  • Responsible for ensuring that the impact of safety, environmental and other requirements of the safety assessments are translated effectively into an understanding of requirements for engineered systems.
  • Responsible for obtaining design solutions through the supply chain that satisfy the requirements of the established by the Requirements and Programme function.

Mentor and support to the Engineering Managers

  • Contributes to the development of the engineering programme and engineering input to siting and engagement activities.
  • Responsible for mentoring and provision of professional guidance to Engineering Managers and ensuring that they achieve and maintain appropriate professional standards and qualifications.

Strategy and programme development

  • Supports the Head of Engineering by contributing to the development of NWS’s engineering strategy.
  • Develops the engineering design programme in own areas and supports the Head of Engineering by contributing to the development of the overall programme for engineering design.
  • Understands how international radioactive waste management organisations have developed design solutions and their applicability to disposal systems.
  • Manages risks associated with the delivery of the work programme, with accountability for their assessment and mitigation.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Dimensions & limits of authority - No specific financial authorities are delegated to this post holder, as the funds to deliver contract work are managed through appointed project managers.    
Experience Required

Essential

  • Good first degree in engineering subject.
  • Chartered membership or fellowship status of relevant professional institute (or demonstrate working towards).
  • Nationally recognised senior practitioner within own engineering discipline.
  • Experience of systems engineering and management of contracts for safety integrated engineering design development.
  • Demonstrated ability to represent NWS in regulatory, commercial, professional and stakeholder environments.

Desirable

  • Detailed understanding of aspects of LLWR Programmes; NSD Programme; or GDF and / or transport system within own technical discipline.
